Van Ginkel attended the Alberta College of Art for four years when he was offered a salary position at the "Calgary Herald" as a graphic artist. Van Ginkel enjoyed the discipline of working under deadlines and problem solving as well as the opportunity to work on a variety of assignments. While working at the Herald he continued to paint in his spare time and in 1990 he quit to paint full time.

In 1992 Van Ginkel did his first "Calgary Stampede" a ten day long rodeo and art fair. The Calgary Stampede continues to be a signature event in Van Ginkel's career; every year he sells half of his output for the year at the show.

In November of 1992 Paul Van Ginkel made his first trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico a city which has had a great influence on his career. In 1994 he returned for four months to paint and learn from the art business atmosphere.
